“The Social Network” by David Fincher No. 1 spot at box offices!

The Social Network - Facebook Movie PosterDavid Fincher’s latest movie was released on September 24th at New York Film Festival and on its first week The Social Network found millions of friends in theatres during the weekend, taking in $23 million and earning the No. 1 spot at box offices. Isn’t that great? I’ve been talking to a friend of mine about David Fincher‘s work and realized he never experienced this huge feedback, even when he’s directed some of the best movies out there such as Fight Club and Se7en.

So what is The Social Network about?

I bet you all know that already but here I go anyways: on a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg (19-year-old, drunken, post-breakup) sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history, but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications. Yes, The Social Network tells of the founding of the popular social-networking website, Facebook. But just like the tagline claims “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies” and this is the case of Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) since all his eventual enemies originally count him as a friend or a partner: the most prominent of this adversaries turns out to be Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), Zuckerberg‘s roommate and business partner. Saverin was the original funder of Facebook, which was born from an idea to create a MySpace made exclusively for Harvard students… Apparently the resemblances to Citizen Kane are innumerable… Also, you don’t want to miss Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker (the creator of Napster) who will be the one who sets in motion the betrayal of Saverin

They are already talking about “the movie of the year” and director David Fincher has earned wide praise from critics, scoring a 97 percent positive rating on website rottentomatoes.com, which ranks films after compiling reviews. Film critic Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times) gave it 4 stars, writing: ‘David Fincher’s film has the rare quality of being not only as smart as its brilliant hero, but in the same way. It is cocksure, impatient, cold, exciting and instinctively perceptive.’ Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) gave the film his first full 4-star rating of the year and said: ‘The Social Network gets you drunk on movies again. It deserves to go viral.’ Lou Lumenick (New York Post) said ‘…quite possibly the first truly great fact-based movie of the 21st century.”

Columbia hopes The Social Network may even compete for this year’s Oscars, and a solid start at box offices will go a long way toward boosting its prospects for awards.
